Requirements

To become a Flight Dispatcher in Canada, you must:

  • Speak either English or French fluently.
  • Be at least 21 years of age at the time of your Flight Dispatcher Certificate application.

If you are not a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant, check with the Canadian Government in advance to determine whether you will need:

  • A visa to work in Canada.
  • A student visa to study in Canada.

Additional Requirements

 Aeronautical Restricted Radio Operator’s Permit

  • Required to operate radio equipment as a Flight Dispatcher legally.
  • The exam can be taken in written or oral format through Industry Canada or an authorized radio inspector.
  • The cost is typically less than $100, and the permit remains valid for life.
  • Our course materials include everything needed to prepare for this exam.

Flight Dispatcher Competency Check

  • Conducted during an actual shift to ensure you can perform real-world duties.
  • Required after completing your Air Operator’s Flight Dispatcher Specific Training as approved by Transport Canada.
  • Passing this check allows you to receive your Flight Dispatcher Certificate, which is valid only in Canada and only with the specific air operator where you are employed.

To maintain your Flight Dispatcher Certificate, you must successfully complete annual competency checks.

What Do the Exams Consist Of?

 To obtain your Flight Dispatcher Certification, you must successfully pass the two Transport Canada Flight Dispatcher Generic Written Examinations:

  • FDOPS (80 Questions) – Covers:
    1. Aviation Regulations and Air Traffic Procedures
    2. Aeroplane Operations and General Navigation
    3. Radio aids and Flight Planning
  • FDMET (100 Questions) – Focuses on Meteorology.

A minimum passing score of 70% is required for each exam.

How Much Study Time is Required?

The time required to prepare for the exams varies based on experience. Pilots and aviation professionals may require less time, while those with no aviation background should expect 150-200 hours of self-study using our training material.

Anyone can sit the FD Examinations without prior authorization or an advance recommendation letter.

What Happens After You Pass the Exams?

Once you pass the FD Exams, you must find employment with a Canadian air operator. We do not provide job placement services, but flight dispatchers are in demand across Canada.

Upon being hired, your air operator will provide you with Flight Dispatcher Specific Training, which is required before you can obtain your final Flight Dispatcher Certificate.

Malkeet Singh

Malkeet is currently a King Air B200 pilot and part-time flight instructor based in Saskatoon, SK. Malkeet began his aviation career in Canada as a Flight Dispatcher at Rise Air, a Type B operation. As a Flight Dispatcher, Malkeet built skills necessary to plan, monitor and communicate with various departments to coordinate safe and efficient flight operations. 

Malkeet’s focus with Flight Dispatcher Exam Prep will be teaching Flight Operations and Meteorology.

Dean is currently a Boeing 777 airline pilot, based in Dubai, UAE. The experience has been incredible, while challenging at times, flying into different countries where navigational procedures differ. Dean has also operated the Boeing 737, Dash 8-400, and King Air 200.

Dean also has Flight Instructor experience, primarily teaching Multi-Engine & Instrument Ratings. A Flight Instructor since 2014, Dean’s passion also lies in teaching and mentoring others within the Aviation Industry.

FAQ

What are the requirements to attempt the FDOps & FDMet exams?

The only requirement is to have a File Number with Transport Canada; otherwise, there are no prerequisites to attempt both the FDMet & FDOps exams. Both exams are free of charge. 

You must be at least 21 years old & Fluent in either English or French

Next, you must pass the FDOPS & FDMET exams along with the Aeronautical Restricted Radio Operator’s Permit.

After being hired by an Air Operator, you must complete operator-specific training and a competency check to receive your Flight Dispatcher Certificate.
